Developed using the MOHLTC Capital Planning Process, CJE was involved in all 5 stages of the planning of the project in order to ensure that the structural systems and staging requirements were integrated with the Functional Programming of the Facility. This project involved the construction of a new 82,000ft2, 2-storey horizontal expansion and the renovation of 27,000ft2 of existing facility (including the removal/repair of existing load bearing elements). Due to the age of the existing building and amount of renovation that was required, extensive Stage 2 and 3 investigation services, including an existing documentation review and on-site survey/condition assessment, were performed. The new buildings were designed using a combination of reinforced cast-in-place concrete and structural steel. The renovations to the existing building were performed using a combination of timber, steel, masonry, and cast-in-place concrete. The demolition of existing facilities was staged to allow for the transfer of fully operating hospital functions to the new building areas. This staging was developed through an extensive team design approach in which the consultants worked comprehensively with each other, as well as, the owners and users to ensure that the project was able to be completed in a timely manner while not affecting day to day operations of the hospital.
