Project Case Studies

  • 1550 Carling Avenue Rehabilitation and Expansion Project

    Ottawa, Ontario

The rehabilitation and expansion of the existing industrial building at 1550 Carling Avenue created a state-of-the-art high-tech facility for Nortel Networks. The building was stripped to its bare structure with structural reinforcing added to facilitate additional architectural and mechanical elements. Additional elements were added; canopies, entrances, stairs and elevator to enhance access and life safety. The building received the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) award for “Renovated Building of the Year”. Michael was responsible for the concept design, preliminary design, material research, cost estimates, design, contract document preparation, tender coordination, contract administration, site review and electronic as-built record documents.

  • Dymon Self Storage Buildings

    Ottawa, Ontario

Varying in size from two to six storeys and up to 150,000 ft2 each, the structural steel buildings used moment frame construction in each bay of the building in order to conform to 2006 OBC requirements for storage buildings and maintain consistent open bays suitable for highly efficient layouts of storage units and corridors. The client’s aggressive design & construction schedule and desire to have LEED certified buildings required the design consultants to maintain exceptional lines of communication and a complete team approach throughout the course of the project. To date, five facilities have been completed in Ottawa with 2 more under construction.

  • Iogen Ethanol Demonstration Plant

    Ottawa, Ontario

The Iogen Ethanol Demonstration Plant is an industrial project where Iogen Corporation, in conjunction with PetroCanada and Technical Partnership Canada, intends to demonstrate their specialized process to break down corn stover using enzymes. The sugars are separated from the feedstock and eventually processed to produce ethanol for fuel additive in internal combustion engines. The work consists of a structural steel frame 70 feet high with a composite concrete floor on metal deck with a total floor area of 60,300 ft². The envelope includes insulated metal cladding and a standard built up roof. The ground floor is constructed on concrete mattresses 30 inches thick with a floor plate of 15,900 ft². The process includes 22 separate process and instrumentation diagrams and involves several storage vessels and other heavy equipment. The plant is based on new technology but is being built with many refurbished equipment components.

  • Orgaworld Composting Facility

    Ottawa, Ontario

Structural design of the 150,000 ft2 facility, which can receive and process 100,000 tonnes of organic waste annually. The design incorporated a steel shell building with internal concrete composting tunnels. The design was completed on an aggressive schedule with constantly changing design requirements.

  • General Electric Canada, Nuclear Products Facility

    Arnprior, Ontario

This 50,000 ft² new production facility includes equipment pits, bases, trenches, overhead crane, service and administrative support areas. This facility produces high precision tubing for nuclear reactor bundles.
