Mississippi River, Ontario
Cleland Jardine Engineering Ltd was retained to evaluate the condition of two generating stations on the Mississippi River in Ontario. The assessment focused on the condition of the concrete structures and required coordination with a commercial dive team. A visual assessment of the dam piers, channel walls, and superstructures was performed and recommendations were provided for the concrete repairs.
The main objective of the rehabilitation project conducted for Public Works & Government Services Canada was to prolong the service life of the Union Bridge, an important link over the Ottawa River. Constructed in 1919, this steel truss bridge spans 73m across the Chaudière Falls and across the Ontario-Quebec provincial border. The rehabilitation project involved detailed condition surveys of the superstructure and the preparation of remedial design drawings to rectify severe corrosion of structural steel elements, reinforcement of impact damaged sections of the bridge and rehabilitation of deteriorated concrete substructures. The project was implemented in 2010 in conjunction with repainting of structural steel.
